HOCKEY’S POPULARITY, HUGE!
With a steady climb up the sport’s popularity ladder, hockey is consistently right behind football, basketball, baseball, and soccer. The fans of the sport are certainly glad to see this!
In fact according to a recent Harris Poll, hockey is currently tied with basketball for popularity. The Harris Poll (of 2,237 adults) found football’s popularity strong at 36%, but there is an even 5% for basketball and for hockey alike. Hockey fans are not misguided though and realize that basketball most likely still exceeds hockey in popularity, accessibility, and participation overall.
WORLD OF HOCKEY
The NHL (National Hockey League) is the biggest and most well-known major league hockey organization. They have 30 franchised/member clubs and 23 of those are in America and 7 are in Canada. There are many other minor leagues and local clubs and organizations as well.
The odds makers don't spend the same amount of time creating NHL odds as they do a more popular sport and those that are willing to put the time into handicapping can do well. Hockey bettors will be able to generally find lower betting limits on NHL games, lower than those that they will generally find in the NFL or NBA, and this is something which is generally acknowledged by the sportsbooks (that they are less comfortable accepting bets on the NHL than they are in the other two sports).
